What is Emma really about ?

~Baby, is my love too old for you?
    'Cause Emma I'm for you~

I've always been intrigued by this song.
I think it tells the story of a father and her daughter. The father, divorced, went to jail for some reason, during a certain amount of time. Out of jail, he now wants to re-etablish links with his young daughter. She doesn't really know him and like him, because they spent so much time away from the other, and he is surrounded by criminality. However, the father will do anything to see her daughter loving him again, e.g. fight hell and silence and hold her on carnavals.

What do you think? or am I falling off the tracks^^?

Very interesting, I have heard a lot of questions about this song, it is very open to interpretation. Many think it's a genuine love song to a lover, but others have some very interesting and fitting ideas too.
@Mr Walrusman had a very interesting thought- that it was about a serial killer who abducts young girls! I'll let him give you the details.

Emma definitely has a dark side. The hell and silence he refers to could also just refer to an argument. The song could speak of how difficult it is to relate to some people on an adult level when they figuratively or literally hide. I have called Dan and old soul. The song Thirty Lives is a hint that he may feel the same way too. Maybe he means his love it too old for Emma because she is the same age numerically but immature?

Yes! That's a great point of view! I've never thought of this. I agree with the point that Dan seems to be an old soul.

I did indeed think about Emma while listening to it, came up with the theory that it was a pedophile since he mentions his love is "too old" for her. And he talks about "loaded guns" and "innocence is bound to run"

There is also the part where "Jackie" dies from him giving her "love" after she runs and hides.

Pretty dark song if you look at it from that view, there is also the lyrics "Is owned by hope it's where you're at" and in the perspective of a child abductor the young girl probably has hope of escaping or something. "Holding you in carnivals" Sounds like he might have found her at one.
